In search of the wonderland

Four coastal cultural organisations – the Pranas Domšaitis Gallery of the Lithuanian Art Museum, the Curonian Spit National Park, the Non-Profit Organisation Thomas Mann Cultural Centre, and the Non-Profit Organisation the Society of East Prussian Art Lovers’ Nida have developed a cultural tourism route In Search of the Wonderful Land. From the Artists’ Colony in Nida to Pranas Domšaitis. The route is for those loving to travel and interested in the cultural and artistic heritage of the coastal region.
The project is a part of the programme Klaipėda Lithuanian Capital of Culture 2017.

The project is sponsored by the Klaipėda City Municipality and Neringa Museums.
The route focuses on several unique phenomena that are related to the coastal region - the visitors will discover a historic Artists’ Colony in Nida, and the Pranas Domšaitis Art Works. Pranas Domšaitis, an expressionist painter with his roots in Lithuania Minor (Prussian Lithuania), whose works are held in a permanent museum collection in Klaipėda, as well as in a valuable collection gathered by Klaipėda’s resident Aleksandr Popov 19th and the First Half of the 20th Century East Prussian Painting and Graphic Art.
Besides, the route will guide the visitors to equally important locations in Nida and Klaipeda that relate to artists who were born or lived in this region as well as to places on the Baltic Sea Coast and the Curonian Lagoon that inspired these artists.

The route does not require following a strict sequence for visiting sites. It is an open and free cultural tourism route which can be joined at any stage: starting from Klaipėda, Nida, or at any other point of your interest. A mobile application (www.nuostabiojizeme.lt) with an interactive map or a conventional foldable map which is made available at the tourism information centres and museums in Klaipėda, Juodkrantė and Nida will lead you through the route.

Visiting the route or any of its sites can be done all year round, preferable with a company like one’s family or friends, colleagues, classmates, enjoying the feeling of discovery, appreciating significant art heritage locations and admiring the ever changing nature. Three events on this route are active exceptionally during the touristic season, namely the plein air painting workshops in Smiltynė, exhibitions in Juodkrantė and Nida. All other sites can be visiting at any time of the year.
