Applications for the Schwalenberg scholarship for Visual Artists of the Lippe Regional Association are now open
Application deadline: February 14, 2025
The Künstlerhaus in Schwalenberg is awaiting its new fellow for the year 2025. The residency scholarship for visual artists of the Lippe Regional Association is available for the period from May 1, 2025, to October 31, 2025. It is open to artists from all fields of visual arts with appropriate qualifications.
The scholarship offers a monthly stipend, a simple apartment, and a workspace in the spacious shared studio at the Künstlerhaus Schwalenberg. At the end of the scholarship, a catalog will be created, and an exhibition will be held.
The artist town of Schwalenberg, located in the southeastern part of Lippe, has been a magnet for artists since the 19th century, offering inspiration for their creative work in the picturesque surroundings. In the early 20th century, an artist colony was established there.
Since the 1970s, the Landesverband Lippe and the city of Schieder-Schwalenberg have continued the tradition of Schwalenberg as an art hub through regular art exhibitions, the Schwalenberger Summer Academy, and art events.
The Schwalenberg Scholarship for Visual Arts, awarded by the Landesverband Lippe, has been in existence since the early 1980s. The goal of the scholarship is to support young visual artists. It is also intended to establish Schwalenberg as a vibrant contemporary art scene, connected to the tradition of the Schwalenberg artist colony. The scholarship holders live and work in the Künstlerhaus, which, in addition to apartments for artists, also offers a communal studio with a scenic view of the valley.
Who can apply? The scholarship is open to visual artists from all fields who wish to live and work in the artist town of Schwalenberg. Requirements include:
- A completed degree in visual arts from a university or art school; the degree / master’s year should not be more than 7 years ago.
- Continuous artistic practice.
- A valid residence permit in Germany.
The scholarship holder will be selected by a jury and the cultural agency of the Landesverband Lippe. The recipient must establish their residence in Schwalenberg for the duration of the scholarship and work towards a final exhibition, which will take place in October at the end of the scholarship.
We offer:
- A simply furnished, fully equipped apartment (approx. 45 m²) in the Künstlerhaus, provided free of charge to the scholarship holder.
- A workspace in the spacious shared studio on the top floor of the Künstlerhaus.
- A monthly stipend of €800.
- A one-time material cost subsidy of €800.
- Regular public presentations, such as “Open Studio Days” or artist talks, organized by the Lippische Kulturagentur.
- The creation and printing of a catalog.
- A curated final exhibition of the scholarship holder and 1-3 guest artists in the Robert Koepke Haus in Schwalenberg, with over 240 m² of exhibition space. The Lippische Kulturagentur will handle the organization.
Contemporary art from regionally renowned artists is shown in the Robert Koepke Haus. Under the programmatic title “Stipendiat*in & friends,” 1-3 young contemporary artistic positions from the scholarship holder’s environment (a city, an art university) will be showcased, with the scholarship holder at the center. The scholarship holder can propose guest artists during the application process or during the scholarship period.
A work created during the scholarship period must be donated by the scholarship holder to the Landesverband Lippe for documentation purposes. The piece will be selected by the Lippische Kulturagentur.
