Painting: Fritz Grebe “Unter blühendem Dornbusch”, oil on canvas, 61 x 81 cm

On Sunday, 11 December 2022, at 11 a.m., the Kunstkaten Ahrenshoop opens its winter exhibition with paintings by Fritz Grebe.
The painter first visited Ahrenshoop in 1892 and met artists there who wanted to found a colony. He too became a founding member. On Grenzweg, he built himself and his family the “Villa Grebe” in half-timbered style.
Before that, Fritz Grebe, at the age of 21, travelled to America on a steamship together with German emigrants and tried to gain a foothold there. It is not known why he returned to Germany. In 1873 he began to study at the academy of arts in Kassel. This was followed by participation in exhibitions in Düsseldorf, Berlin and Dresden at the Great Art Exhibitions.
In 1874 Grebe undertook his first trip to Norway, which significantly developed his pictorial subject and boosted the sale of his paintings.
In Ahrenshoop, rural life and the landscape were the main motifs of his work. His realistic painting style and a sensitive feeling for special light moods are characteristic of Grebe’s pictures.
