My friend the tree
September, 8th - December, 15th 2019
Mühlenstraße 12, Schwaan
The tree was worshiped and was often the center of social life in villages and towns.
For the artists, the tree often plays a central role, is a symbol of strength and durability. Standing with its branches in the sky and yet firmly rooted in the earth.
Landscape paintings from various German artist colonies were selected for the exhibition at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Every colony has depicted the tree as a chronicler of the landscape in a very special way.
The painters therefore left the native plant and tree species in their usual environment and captured them in their natural color and light mood. Trees that fulfilled a specific function could make places more picturesque: a house, a garden, a street. They served as protection against sun, wind or rain, as a fruit or ornamental plant. The fact that plants or trees can characterize entire regions is illustrated in the exhibition.
