Statues in Katwijk
January, 11th - February, 16th 2020
Boulevard Zeezijde 31, Katwwijk
At the start of 2020, DUNAatelier shows a number of unique images of Steylaert and works by painter Jeroen Hermkens. Bronsgieter Steylaert is lending a number of images this year for the exhibition Images in Katwijk. A tradition that was set in motion during the life of Gerard Brouwer (1951-2017). Hans Steylaert, who regularly exhibits his collection in his studio, does this in memory of his friend.
The exhibition in the DUNAatelier on the Boulevard in Katwijk can be visited from 11 January to 16 February on Friday to Sunday from 1.30 pm to 4 pm. Admission is free.
The images shown are by various artists. The exhibition consists of a number of large but also smaller images that Steylaert cast for his own collection. There are many sculptors who like to have their sculptures cast at Steylaert. He has learned a lot from the artists and likes to work with them.
Paintings are displayed next to the sculptures. This year these are works by Jeroen Hermkens, an artist who has also participated in Katwijk En Plein Air, painting by the sea.
The artist practices many genres. He is best known for his color lithographs of cities that he himself prints from the stone with a press in his studio. You can also admire several murals made by him, such as in the Utrecht theater. Nowadays he also paints nudes, which were exhibited in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht not so long ago.
The paintings that DUNAatelier shows originated in various places in Europe and beyond. Cities fascinate him and he regularly visits them in search of fascinating places. In his studio he works out his sketches and preliminary studies into monumental paintings. One of them originated in Azerbaijan where Hermkens made a number of paintings for a well-known dredging company.
He paints his colorful works of buildings, squares and other places in cities in a very recognizable smooth style, using abstraction and slight distortions of the buildings or the immediate surroundings.
The exhibition can be seen on the ground floor of the DUNAatelier.
From the 25th of January the paintings from the collection of the Kunstvereeniging Katwijk foundation can be seen and sold in the basement.
