Walther Klemm and Carl Thiemann. Two masters of color woodcut

Dachau: Wather Klemm and Carl Thiemann

The painter and graphic artist Carl Thiemann from Karlsbad had settled in 1908 together with his artist colleague Walther Klemm in the small market town of Dachau known as the artist colony. Previously, they had learned this graphic technique in Vienna through Emil Orlik, who had discovered color woodblock printing on a trip to Japan in 1900/01, and had mastered and perfected it. With their work they became known far beyond Dachau and made Dachau an important center for color woodcuts.
