Between the Baltic Sea and the Spreewald
Walter Moras (1856 – 1925)
Special exhibition to mark the 100th anniversary of his death

Inspired by his teacher Hermann Eschke, the young painter Walter Moras visited Fischland several times between 1880 and 1890. His view of the landscape was very different from that of the painters who founded the artists’ colony in Ahrenshoop a few years later and popularised the remote fishing village with their paintings. The famous art writer Ludwig Pietsch wrote about him: ‘What is so appealing here, apart from the technical perfection, is the deep natural atmosphere, the intimate grasp of the magic of the German landscape, the complete immersion in difficult yet rewarding motifs. What characterises his mastery is the fusion of unconditional truth with the light shimmer of soulful poetic feeling.’ 4 March 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of Walter Moras’ death, an occasion for the Kunstkaten Ahrenshoop to honour him with a comprehensive exhibition of his work.
