Critical – Witty – Biting / Kritisch – witzig – bissig
Printmaking from the 1950s to the 1970s

Throughout the history of art, printmaking has been a medium for many artists to address current events in a documentary, critical or even satirical manner. The various printmaking techniques also offered the opportunity to approach diverse pictorial themes in a light-hearted, witty, humorous and playful way.
The exhibition shows prints from a private collection dating from the 1950s to the 1970s. The focus is on works by artists from the Kunstverein Hamburg, Kunstverein Hannover and the Kestner Gesellschaft Hannover as well as works by other artists that were acquired at exhibitions in Hamburg and Hannover. These include works by artists who have had a lasting influence on subsequent generations of artists.
The exhibition shows works by, among others: Karel Appel, Hans Arp, Bele Bachem, Salvador Dalí, Georg Gresko, HAP Grieshaber, Erich Heckel, Horst Janssen, Oskar Kokoschka, Gerhard Richter, Lothar Walter and Marianne Weingärtner.
All works are kindly on loan from a private collection (Wellmann Collection).
