Halle by the sea / Halle am Meer
Artists’ colony, summer guests, beach zone Ahrenshoop 1892-2023

The special exhibition presents for the first time in a large panorama the works created in confrontation with the Baltic Sea and unites more than 240 works of mainly Halle artists from one and a half centuries. The exhibition project is a cooperation with the Dresden Institute for Cultural Studies. It took place in Halle (Saale) in the summer of 2023 at the Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle (Saale) and the Kunsthalle “Talstraße”. In Ahrenshoop, the exhibition will be shown in a slightly shortened form at the Kunstmuseum Ahrenshoop as well as at the Kunstkaten Ahrenshoop.

The chronological prelude of the two-part show is made by the art museum with paintings by representatives of the artists’ colony Ahrenshoop. From 1892 to 1897 there was a wave of painters settling here. After Anna Gerresheim and Paul Müller-Kaempff, who were the first, Friedrich Wachenhusen, Friedrich Grebe, Elisabeth von Eicken, Hugo Richter-Lefensdorf and others built their houses in the village and made Ahrenshoop their creative center. The artists changed the place and created the myth of Ahrenshoop through their work.
