Light Form Shadow / Licht Form Schatten
This year, Worpswede is celebrating the 150th birthday of Bernhard Hoetger, one of the most important artistic personalities of the artists’ village. To mark the occasion, a sculptors’ symposium is being organised in Worpswede.
6 selected artists will be working daily between 11.00 am and 6.00 pm on the grounds of the Altes Rathaus gallery on the theme of ‘Light – Form – Shadow’. Inspired by the life and work of the sculptor Bernhard Hoetger, the participating artists will use his work as a leitmotif, giving it a contemporary aesthetic form with their individual ideas and designs.
Of the sculptures that Hoetger created for the Darmstadt plane tree grove on the occasion of the Third Exhibition of the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony, one cycle has survived. Hoetger entitled this cycle, whose interrelated individual figures represent symbols of human virtues, vices and passions, ‘Light and Shadow Sides’. After moving to Worpswede, he also designed the extensive park of his Worpswede residence, the Brunnenhof, with sculptures from this cycle.
The theme of the symposium is intended to create an art and cultural-historical reference to Bernhard Hoetger and his understanding of art as well as to the present and the current social situation.
The participating sculptors are: Rainer Fest, Dietrich Heller, Mirsad Herenda, Marina Schreiber, Thorsten Schütt and Lothar Seruset. They will create their works of art from stone, wood, metal, polyester and other materials in the open air.
Those interested in sculpture can look over the artists’ shoulders and are invited to accompany the process of creating the sculptures on site for three weeks.
Once the artworks have been completed, they will be exhibited on the Bergstrasse in Worpswede for at least a year and can be viewed around the clock.
