Peter Paul Draewing. 150th Anniversary of his Birth.

Draewing was born on 29 June 1876, the son of a cigar maker. Like Franz Bunke and Rudolf Bartels, he was a native of Schwaan. After training as a decorative painter and attending the Rostock School of Applied Arts, Draewing received his first artistic instruction from Franz Bunke. On Bunke’s advice, he began a course of study in Weimar, but his financial means were only sufficient for one semester. An opportunity arose to work on the decoration of Hamburg Town Hall under the supervision of Arthur Fitger. The money he earned enabled him to continue his studies at the Weimar Art School from 1896 onwards. Draewing (or Drewing) was also a member of the Apelles artists’ association. In 1904, Draewing transferred to the Kassel Academy of Fine Arts to perfect his skills in drawing and etching. He returned to Weimar in 1907 as a freelance artist. The Schwaan Art Museum is dedicating a small but exquisite solo exhibition to the artist and, at the same time, presenting the museum’s considerable collection of his works.
