“Terra Incognita” or Unknown Territory

Three professional German artists

Sibylle Bross, Corinna Weiner and Carola Schapals shape this theme, on view from 17 May to 23 June at the Katwijk-based DUNAatelier. The artists paint both in the studio and outside ‘en plein air’. All three are members of the Katwijkerring.

Sibylle Bross likes to come to Katwijk to paint the sea. She was here recently with some students and now shows a different side: figuration and abstraction in one painting, coarse yet detailed. She looks for movement to represent in the paintings and paints portraits, nudes, landscapes, still lifes and human figures in various techniques such as oil, acrylic, drawing techniques and watercolour. She also combines these techniques.

So does Corinna Weiner. The artist experiments a lot with both techniques and subjects. She uses oil paints and brushes as well as spray paint. The field of tension between man and nature, but also that of female role models and identity are subjects for her.

Carola Schapals, on the other hand, is in search of magical places in nature. In combining unusual architecture with nature, she manages to depict a special atmosphere. Dream images, nudes painted in the studio and ‘plein air’ subjects alternate.

The title of the exhibition ‘Terra Incognita’ or ‘unknown territory’ reflects the three women’s love of experimentation.

The exhibition at the DUNA studio is open Friday to Sunday between 1.30pm and 4.30pm. Admission is free
The DUNAatelier is located on the Duinplein, Boulevard Zeezijde 31 near the Vuurbaak. Opposite, next to the fish stall, a road leads down to the square where you can park (paid).
