Textile quartet I Textielkwartet
Marijke van Oostrum, Nicole Ladrak, Tilleke Schwarz and Mathilde Renes were trained at various art academies.
Marijke van Oostrum talks about her work: ‘Walking through the Amsterdam forest every day, almost always the same round but still different every day.
The sun through the leaves, the shadows, the changing of the seasons.
At home, I try to catch the light behind the sewing machine with hundreds of patches as a palette.
Old clothes are my paint, many touches on top of each other and slowly a memory of a moment of wonder arises.’
Tilleke Schwarz creates humorous and poetic embroidery on fine linen. Her inspiration comes from everyday life, the media, traditional patterns and cats. She invents almost nothing: ‘Reality is usually stranger than anything she can imagine’. She incorporates everything playfully and graphically. Tilleke is also internationally known. She is a member of Pulchri Studio and of organisations in the US and Great Britain. Her work has appeared in many books and (professional) magazines. Her book ‘New Potatoes’ is for sale at the exhibition, just like the works on display.
Mat Mathilde Renes tells stories with textiles, both autobiographical and about women in general. For the autobiographical, she draws inspiration from her drawn diary in which she has recorded her daily life since 1997. A special series created from this is ‘Sweet Memories’ following the death in 2020 of her friend and soulmate Wilma. The slow embroidery and reliving of the scenes worked as grief counselling. Mathilde likes to change techniques and materials. For example, she uses photos on transfers, paint and vintage materials in addition to embroidery. Several articles have appeared in (inter)national magazines (print or online) about her work.
Nicole Ladrak creates her ‘paintings of fabric’ using a self-developed, unique technique. No paint or glue is involved in the work. Her images consist of several pieces of plain fabric, which are covered with layers of tulle. The layers of tulle create light-dark effects and give the work an unexpected depth. The highly visible stitches enhance the contours. The colourful end result is always surprising. Female figures, birds and still lifes are her favourites.
The exhibition can be seen from 15 November to 12 January 2025 in the DUNAatelier
The DUNAatelier is located on the Duinplein, Boulevard Zeezijde 31 near the Vuurbaak. Opposite, next to the fish stall, a road leads down to the square where you can park (paid).
