The special exhibition “The Hutterites. A Search for Traces in Klausen” is accompanied by the group exhibition of UNIKA with the Ladin title “PESC,” which means PEACE – an ideal that connects both exhibitions at the Klausen City Museum. They are part of the initiatives for the Euregio Museum Year 2025 “see further,” which, in memory of the Peasants’ War of 1525, addresses current issues.

THE HUTTERITES
A Search for Traces in Klausen

The nearly 500-year history of the Hutterites, who were expelled from Tyrol in the 16th century, is that of a minority that was marginalized and persecuted due to their religious ideas and community organization. However, the focus is also on plurality and openness to foreign ideas. The teachings of the Anabaptists gained significant support in Tyrol, as well as in Klausen. One of the most prominent preachers and religious leaders of the Hutterites, Peter Walpot, was a native of Klausen. On the other hand, the Hutterites faced relentless persecution, as prominent examples from Klausen also show. Jakob Huter, born near St. Lorenzen, took over the leadership of the Anabaptists in Tyrol early on and organized the community’s life. In the 16th century, the Anabaptists moved to the tolerant region of Moravia. This began a time of prosperity. From the 17th century, they had to move on, eventually reaching North America. Here, despite some crises, they have been able to preserve their faith and a well-functioning community to this day.

“PESC”

The group exhibition “PESC” at the Klausen City Museum was created in collaboration with the artists’ association UNIKA from Gröden and is dedicated to the universal theme of peace. Peace is a process that can affect many dimensions of life – individually, collectively, and globally. Seeking peace, finding peace, making peace with oneself, with the past, with the future, with change, with other people, and why not also with mortality. Artists from various creative disciplines – sculpture, painting, woodturning, and photography – present their works, expressing individual and collective perspectives on peace. The exhibition invites visitors to be inspired by the diverse interpretations and to engage in a dialogue about peace in its many facets.
