The opening is on 23.4.2023 at 4 pm, the artist Rhodrick Tayali will be present.
For the first time, works by the famous Zambian artist Henry Tayali (1943-1987, studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1972-1975) and his son Rhodrick Tayali (*1972 in Lusaka, Zambia, lives near Cologne) will be shown in a joint exhibition.
Henry Tayali thematised life in southern Africa in abstract expressionist paintings as well as impressive woodcuts – there are scenes of the race riots and freedom fights in Soweto, but also about the hard life of ordinary people on the land in Zambia.
Rhodrick Tayali, on the other hand, combines in his predominantly abstract paintings the typical, intense African colours he experienced in his childhood with a European-influenced point of view – and thus creates an exciting arch between the two continents and cultures. In addition, he shows a series of portraits – some of them newly painted for the exhibition – of historical and contemporary public figures who stood up for the rights of black people and for the values of democracy.
