Ernst Eitner (1867–1955) – A German Impressionist from Hamburg
Ernst Eitner was one of the prominent representatives of the Hamburg School of Painting around the turn of the century and is considered a central figure in the German Impressionist movement. Born in 1867 in Hamburg, he studied at the Academy in Karlsruhe under Gustav Schönleber, as well as at the academies in Düsseldorf and Antwerp.
From 1894, he taught at the private “Art School for Ladies” in Hamburg, founded by Valeska Röver.
Eitner developed early on a delicate, light-filled color palette and a loose, lively brushstroke characteristic of Impressionism. His subjects range from harbor and cityscapes to maritime scenes, interiors, and portraits. Eitner’s works are distinguished by subtle coloration and a relaxed compositional style that captures fleeting changes in light and atmosphere.
The exhibition features loans from the Eitner estate, the art collection of Hamburger Sparkasse, the Kunsthalle Kiel, the collection of the Stadtgalerie Kiel, as well as from private collections.
