The Nidden Artists' Colony on the Curonian Spit

Exhibition from June 24 to September 10, 2023 in the Kunstmuseum Schwaan

Nida on the Curonian Spit is one of the oldest artists’ colonies in Europe. Shaped by its unique dune landscape between the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon, it quickly attracted artists from the Königsberg Academy, which introduced landscape painting classes in 1845 and promoted excursions. The seclusion, the natural lifestyle of the fishermen, and the diverse landscape inspired significant works and offered ideal motifs.

Lovis Corinth discovered Nida during his studies (1876–1879). Later, Max Pechstein and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff followed. Starting in 1909, Pechstein spent several summers in Nida and inspired Schmidt-Rottluff to visit in 1913. Their works reflect the influence of the Spit and contributed to the development of Expressionism. At the “Malerwinkel” inn, heated debates about art movements took place, and in 1919, expressionist depictions of Nida dominated an exhibition at the Königsberg Academy.

The Schwaan Art Museum highlights the importance of European artists’ colonies for art movements such as Impressionism and Expressionism. Through exhibitions on Nida and other colonies like Ekensund, Tervuren, and Ahrenshoop, this cultural heritage is honored.

ART FACING ART

Heidrun MalComes & Giuseppe De Simone in Taranto, Italy

Organized by the Clam International Association (Culture, Languages, Art, Music) in collaboration with Artists in Masks (now: Art in Motion) and euroart, the exhibition was curated by Francesca Di Ponzio. This double exhibition features German artist Heidrun MalComes from Grötzingen (Germany) and Taranto-based artist Giuseppe De Simone (Italy).
MalComes, a photographer, painter, and sculptor, has exhibited her work in various national and international galleries, earning numerous awards and accolades. Her art reflects an open and reflective approach, placing the human experience and its pain at the center of her creations. Embracing the philosophy of “panta rhei” (everything flows), her work transcends singular themes.
De Simone, a poet, painter, sculptor, and visionary artist from the “City of Two Seas,” has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions in both public and private galleries. A true explorer of art in all its forms, his work embodies a continuous pursuit of style, techniques, and expressions. His artistic output is characterized by contrasts: uncertainty and confidence, depth and light, rationality and creativity, colors and shadows, motion and stillness.

The exhibition ran from September 23 to October 30, 2022.

The Tervuren Artists' Colony Visits Schwaan

Exhibition in Kunstmuseum Schwaan

The annual theme of Kunstmuseum Schwaan in 2022 was “Connections,” highlighting the vital role of artistic exchange in shaping late 19th and early 20th-century art movements. As a historic artists’ colony, Schwaan celebrated this European phenomenon by presenting the Tervuren Artists’ Colony from Belgium, renowned for its influence on European art.
The exhibition featured 45 paintings from the Tervuren School, showcasing the artistic legacy of the Belgian town near Brussels, now a hub of European activity. Running from June 15 to August 20, 2022, it attracted a diverse audience, contributing to the visibility of artists’ colonies and euroart.

HIDDENSEE-UTOPIA

Feasibility Study for the Hiddensee Scholarship Center

The feasibility study for the Hiddensee Fellowship Center aims to explore the necessary framework conditions as a pre-investment measure and make a pioneering, substantial contribution to the cultural development potential of the island. The goal is to develop a concept for a fellowship center where groups (composed of artists, natural scientists, and humanities scholars) come together based on shared interests to collaboratively address topics under artistic direction and work on them on-site.

STUG EN STOER (tenacious and strong)

The path of Jo Koster and Dora Koch-Stetter

The fact that the Dutch artist Jo Koster and the German artist Dora Stetter were associated with various European artist colonies is clearly reflected in their works. In an impressive overview of paintings and graphics created in places such as Domburg, Staphorst, Heeze, Knokke, and Ahrenshoop, the differences and similarities between the two artists are highlighted.
Using Jo Koster’s work as a guiding thread, the 2022 Summer Exhibition at the MTVP Museum Domburg traces the development of two artists who began in a traditional manner, with one evolving primarily in a French neo-impressionist style and the other in a German expressionist style. Tenacious, persistent, and powerful in their execution – or, as one might say: The road was arduous, but the women were strong!

Enchanting Capri. A Paradise for Artists

An exhibition by the Gemäldegalerie Dachau and the Museum Kronberger Malerkolonie

Dachau 13.10.2022 – 12.3.2023, Kronberg 2.4. – 25.6.2025

The island of Capri, located in the Gulf of Naples, was already a popular retreat in ancient times. Generations of painters were fascinated by the beauty of the island’s landscapes, and particularly by that of its inhabitants. “The inhabitants of Capri are distinguished by their fine features […]. The artists’ colony, which is a constant presence here (some stay for years), is drawn as much by the beauty of the people as by that of nature,” enthused art historian Carl Justi in 1867. The painters and their works made the island widely known, and it became a vibrant tourist destination.

The Gemäldegalerie Dachau, the first venue of the exhibition, showcased around 80 paintings and graphics by German and Italian painters from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Among them were works by painters Ludwig Dill and Arthur Langhammer, who stayed on Capri around 1880 and later played an important role in the Dachau artists’ colony.

Reconceptualisation of the Kuenstlerhaeuser (artist residency)

Worpswede, Kuenstlerhaeuser, GER

From 23.10 – 24.10.2021, intensive thought was given to the future of the artist residency.
In addition to structural aspects (group rooms to enable encounters, mother-child studios etc.) a big topic was the form and content of the scholarships. Should shorter periods be offered so that women with children can also participate? Should cross-disciplinary scholarships also be offered to collectives? And how can older artists who came to art late in life be supported?
Invited were artists, politicians, museum directors and of course, scholarship holders.
One focus was also on artist in residency places far ouside the city, and so it was very beneficial that euroart invited Ahrenshoop, Simonskall and Hiddensee to participate in the workshop.
Discussions took place in smaller groups, so that intensive contacts were possible.
A successful event, supported by euroart
