Florian Breuer (1916 – 1994)
Between the Baltic Sea and the Indian Ocean

Florian Breuer was born in Berlin and studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts under Max Kaus. During the 1950s he travelled extensively throughout the Mediterranean, India, East Asia, and Ahrenshoop. In 1947 he exhibited jointly with Fritz Koch-Gotha at the Kunstkaten.

His work is characterised by a dynamic vitality and expressiveness. Breuer favoured particularly vivid colours and was drawn to bold chromatic contrasts. He gave himself freely to the intoxicating colours of the tropics, and his line work is suggestive rather than descriptive – tracing the spatial contour with restraint.

His motifs – whether landscape, folkloric, or symbolically sacred in nature – remain rooted in the visible world, even as he pushes formal composition to the threshold of abstraction.
