Önningeby – eine Künstlerkolonie auf den finnischen Ålandinseln

The artist colony Önningeby was founded by the well-known Finnish landscape painter Victor Westerholm (1860–1919), who studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and attended the Académie Julian in Paris. He first came to the Åland Islands in 1886, where he bought a picturesque little house on the Lemström Canal. He invited his artist friends to where he thought was “the best place in the world to paint”. Swedish and Finnish, and later also Estonian artists came, who rented houses in the surrounding farmsteads every summer.
