After the rediscovery of the Blue Grotto in 1826, the Mediterranean island of Capri became a sought-after destination, especially for the Romantics. Generations of painters were fascinated by the beauty of its scenic motifs and its inhabitants. Their paintings made the island widely known. The Dachau Picture Gallery shows around 80 paintings and prints by German and Italian painters from the 19th and early 20th centuries, including works by Ludwig Dill and Arthur Langhammer, who later played an important role in the Dachau artists’ colony.
