Afloat: In the Midst of Eunjeong Kim’s Artworks

Final Exhibition of the Schwalenberg Fellowship 2025 at the Robert Koepke House

Since May, the South Korean artist Eunjeong Kim has been living and working in Schwalenberg as this year’s fellowship holder. Her works create new worlds at the intersection of analogue painting and digital AR and VR technology. From 28 September to 2 November 2025, her art will be presented in the final exhibition Afloat – Eunjeong Kim at the Robert Koepke House. The presentation will be complemented by guest artists Claudia Bartholomäus and Kiwan Choi.

Eunjeong Kim (1990, South Korea)’s paintings are immediately striking for their abstract, colourful, glossy, candy-like objects and forms. Yet a surprising dimension unfolds when she opens up an extended access to her art. Her works thrive on a fascinating interplay between analogue painting and digital art. Combining classical, technically accomplished painterly skills with virtual fantasy worlds created on the computer using 3D software, she explores spatial perception and the immersive qualities of pictorial space. Kim questions the boundaries between digital and analogue media, transferring digital effects into the material realm of painting. Often large in scale and powerful in colour, her abstract paintings expand into virtual three-dimensional worlds, setting painted objects afloat and creating spaces that could not exist in reality.

During her stay in Schwalenberg, Kim also developed a large-scale installation using balloons, pushing her paintings beyond two-dimensionality into the analogue world. This striking installation will be on view in the exhibition alongside her paintings and digital works.

The presentation is further enriched by works of Claudia Bartholomäus and Kiwan Choi, artists whom Kim encountered in Germany and whose artistic positions she found deeply inspiring.
