Artists’ Colony Katwijk – German Grobe (1857 – 1938)

Katwijk aan Zee became a well-known artists’ colony in the second half of the 19th century. Painters moved there to capture light-filled coastal scenes—the sea, the dunes, and Dutch beach life—in a bright, Impressionist, or naturalistic style. A well-known member of this artists’ colony was German Grobe.

He studied in Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, and Munich. Beginning in 1887, he traveled to Katwijk aan Zee every summer for fifty years. There, in 1890, he met Max Liebermann. Grobe made a name for himself within the local artists’ colony. The exhibition features, among other works, seascapes depicting shellfish gatherers, fishing boats, and beach or ocean scenes.
