Birches – Works by Fritz and Hermine Overbeck
Birches are among the most important and most frequent motifs in Worpswede painting. Fritz and Hermine Overbeck, too, returned again and again to the striking white trunks in their pictures – sometimes delicate and gracefully curved, sometimes massive and firmly rooted in the earth. Whether a single trunk by a peat canal, groups of trees at the edge of a field or dead-straight avenues, birches shape the landscape around Worpswede, their pale trunks forming an appealing contrast to the dark Teufelsmoor.
This selection of nearly 100 oil paintings, watercolours, etchings and drawings, each devoted to the birch in its own way, offers a varied overview of the full artistic range with which Fritz and Hermine Overbeck created a lasting tribute to this special tree.
