Paula Modersohn-Becker and her companions. The indivisible sky
Section Worpsweder Kunsthalle:
Free and independent. Ottilie Reylaender
Ottilie Reylaender came to Worpswede as a painting student in 1898. Here she met Paula Becker and was fascinated by her development. Characterized by a longing for faraway places, her path led her via Rome and Paris to Mexico, where she spent 17 years before returning to Berlin in 1927.
The exhibition focuses on Ottilie Reylaender’s central themes and motifs, such as self-portraits and double portraits, landscapes and mother-and-child depictions, which are placed in the context of works by Paula Modersohn-Becker. They illustrate a convergence but also a further development. It is possible to discover an artist who paints at the height of her time and dares to live a free life beyond social conventions.
