material girls V

A work of art derives its meaning and beauty primarily from a creative idea. But there is always another, purely material dimension as well. Every work of art consists of material with its own particular nature, texture and density. The artists’ group “material girls” jointly explores — yet each in her own individual way — the aesthetic richness of material in art. Their works reveal the attraction of the physical, reaching far into the philosophical.

At the Overbeck Museum, Ulrike Brockmann, Claudia Christoffel, Christine Huizenga, Edeltraut Rath, Sabine Schellhorn, Ute Seifert and Elfin Açar present works that relate directly to the themes and motifs of the painter couple Fritz and Hermine Overbeck. Placed side by side, they create a stimulating dialogue between classical Worpswede painting and contemporary art.
