Painted for TV

Peter Smit, Irma Braat, and Bram Stoof painted for Sterren op het doek, portraying Monique van de Ven, Hennie Huisman, and Karin Bloemen.
Raymond Huisman and Maarten Welbergen created a portrait of former prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende. These paintings could not be traced, as the personal data of the buyers was not allowed to be retained. However, preparatory studies are on view.

Titus Meeuws and Maarten Welbergen were tasked during De Nieuwe Vermeer with reconstructing the lost paintings The Second Street and The Painter in His Studio by Johannes Vermeer. They had only a 1696 catalogue with very brief descriptions to work from.
No confirmed self-portrait of Vermeer exists, although two paintings may depict him. A considerable challenge—especially for contemporary artists without traditional academic training.

Bram Stoof, Philine van der Vegte, Maarten Dalstra, and Kees Putman painted for Gezonken Meesters. Descriptions from an auction catalogue provided the basis for their interpretations. The original works had been auctioned in Amsterdam in 1771 and purchased for Catherine the Great. They were lost when the ship Vrouw Maria sank in the Baltic Sea on its way to Saint Petersburg, where they still lie today.
Philine van der Vegte presents her notebook with annotations and studies documenting her process.

Finally, Jeffrey Heemskerk, a relatively recent entrant to the field of painting, attempted in De Nieuwe Rembrandt to reinterpret The Standard Bearer by Rembrandt van Rijn. Visitors may judge for themselves how successful he was.

These paintings are on display on the ground floor. Additional works by all participating artists are exhibited and available for purchase in the basement gallery.
