Siegward Sprotte – Abstractions of landscape / Abstraktionen von Landschaft

In co-operation with the Siegward Sprotte Foundation, the Museum der Havelländischen Malerkolonie is showing works by Siegward Sprotte under the aspect of the abstraction of landscape. Sprotte himself once said that he should not be asked about the geographical home of his paintings. However, the artist, who was initially influenced by the garden artist Karl Foerster and the painter Karl Hagemeister, had close ties to the region around Potsdam. He was born here on 20 April 1913 and grew up here. He set up his first studio on his parents’ property in Bornstedt. He returned there regularly, even when he moved to Kampen on the island of Sylt in 1945. Finally, in 1992, he established the foundation named after him in Potsdam – the city of which he became an honorary citizen in 2003. Sprotte died in Kampen on 7 September 2004.

Sprotte left behind a rich, multifaceted oeuvre. As a common starting point, his works are based on experiencing and recognising nature as the source of creativity. ‘With my painting style, I have sought to work not according to nature, but like nature, in the sense of a permanent variation that makes new variations possible.’

The exhibition was curated by Dominik Bartmann, we would like to thank the Siegward Sprotte Foundation and the Falkenstern Fine Art Gallery for their cooperation and loans.

A catalogue will be published to accompany the exhibition, which can be purchased at the museum and via our online shop from the opening of the exhibition.
