T. Lux Feininger – Modern Romanticism. Attempts at an archetypal scenery /
T. Lux Feininger – Moderne Romantik. Versuche zu einer archetypischen Szenerie

T. Lux Feininger (1910-2011), the youngest son of Lyonel and Julia Feininger, was already a student at the Bauhaus in Dessau at the age of 16. In 1936, he emigrated to the USA, where he lived and worked from then on. His oeuvre, which spans nine decades, is impressively diverse: it includes paintings, drawings, photographs, stage designs, masks and sculptures.

Since his childhood, Feininger felt drawn to archetypal images and inner scenes beneath the surface of everyday life. This exploration of the primal, mythical and symbolic pervades his entire artistic oeuvre. The exhibition is dedicated to these central thematic worlds in four thematic chapters: imagined sea voyages and world travel, dream and memory scenarios, exotic animal and plant worlds as well as the artistic endeavours to gain an archetypal, absolute form from this rich visual language.

A co-operation between the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, the Saxony-Anhalt Cultural Foundation, the Erfurt Museums and the Ahrenshoop Art Museum Foundation. The exhibition is funded by the Ostdeutsche Sparkassenstiftung.
