For the fourteenth time, artists are invited to Lüttenort, the estate of the painter Otto Niemeyer-Holstein. Situated at the narrowest point of the island of Usedom in the far north-east of Germany, this location is uniquely suited to forge connections between northern and southern Europe.

Otto Niemeyer-Holstein, widely regarded as one of the most significant painters of the German Baltic coast, expresses this connecting element through his work: water. A defining characteristic of the artist was his pursuit of contact and exchange with fellow artists. For several years he served as an official cultural ambassador, presiding over the Baltic Sea Biennale.

In November 2026, personal invitations will be sent to artists in Germany and abroad on the recommendation of jury members, and announcements will be placed in the press and with artists’ associations. The application deadline is 1 April 2027.

At the end of April, the jury, chaired by Sabine Curio, will convene to select six artists for the 14th International Plein Air at the Atelier Otto Niemeyer-Holstein in Lüttenort. The selected artists will be announced in the press.

Artists who are invited should, like Otto Niemeyer-Holstein himself, be “admirers of the visible world” (Joachim John) and work in a figurative tradition, in order to fully engage with the locality: the island of Usedom, the artist’s estate of Lüttenort, and the legacy of Otto Niemeyer-Holstein.

The residency concludes with an open studio celebration on Saturday, 18 September 2027, featuring a presentation of works created during the ten days, exhibited in the Neue Galerie at the Atelier Otto Niemeyer-Holstein.

The “14th International Plein Air at the Atelier Otto Niemeyer-Holstein” continues the tradition of highly successful artists’ plein air residencies held every two to three years at the Atelier ONH, including: Ufer – Anfang und Ende der Welt, MEER-Sehen, Reiter auf dem Großen Bären – Otto Niemeyer-Holstein in der Schweiz, Zeitzeugen – Spuren der Veränderung, and Malerfreunde. The 8th International Plein Air marked a milestone: 100 artists had been welcomed as guests at the Atelier Otto Niemeyer-Holstein. In 2024, the Freundeskreis Otto Niemeyer-Holstein, Lüttenort e.V. celebrated its 30th anniversary.

In total, 100 artists from Argentina, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Lithuania, Poland, Switzerland, Great Britain, Chile, Iran, the USA, Ukraine, Estonia, India, Bulgaria and Germany have resided at the Atelier Niemeyer-Holstein since 1994.
