Prien am Chiemsee

Town on Lake Chiem close to Austria, Germany

Pleinairists come together

Lucky – successful artist Hugo Kauffmann discovered Prien am Chiemsee as an optimal living and working place for artists. He praised the beauty of the landscape and the easy access of the town, and settled down there. Many artists followed after him, and so the place became one of the daughter-colonies of the Frauenchiemsee.

The painters of the colony Frauenchiemsee considered themselves “Pleinairists” and turned to en plein air painting, capturing the island’s unique light ambience in their paintings. What a beautiful scene must it have been, painting the lake at dawn. The colony on Frauenwörth had soon become well-known throughout the international art scene, attracting both European and even American artists.

The main artists who lived and worked here:

Wilhelm Marc (*1839 – 1907)
Emil Lugo (*1840 – 1902)
Hugo Kauffmann (*1844 – 1915)
