Artist in Residence

Around 1900, Volendam developed into an international artists’ colony, where painters from both the Netherlands and abroad captured the fishing life, traditional costumes, and the unique light. Hotel Spaander played a central role in this: the hotel provided accommodation and studios for artists and encouraged their creativity. Artists often paid for their stay with paintings, allowing the hotel to build an impressive art collection.

From Friday, June 27 to Friday, July 4, 2025, this tradition will be revived through a contemporary Artist in Residence program. Six artists will be invited to temporarily stay in our municipality and paint, inspired by the same elements as their predecessors.

The works created during the residency will be presented in a special exhibition. In this way, Volendam comes to life once again through the eyes of a new generation of artists, in a contemporary continuation of a rich artistic tradition. The exhibition will be on view from July 4 to July 25, 2025, in the inn at Hotel Spaander.
