Oda Hardt-Rösler, Louise Rösler und Anka Kröhnke. Three artists. / Oda Hardt-Rösler, Louise Rösler und Anka Kröhnke. Drei Künstlerinnen.

The names Oda Hardt-Rösler, Louise Rösler, and Anka Kröhnke represent three generations of female artists whose works captivate through their unique expressive power.

Oda Hardt-Rösler (1875–1946) was a pioneer of her time. The exhibition “Oda Hardt-Rösler, Louise Rösler and Anka Kröhnke. Three Women Artists” seeks not only to explore the changing working conditions of women artists across three generations but also to trace the broader developments in 20th-century art history.

Oda Hardt-Rösler was the grandmother of Anka Kröhnke and the mother of Louise Rösler. While Anka Kröhnke was able to pursue her artistic career with relative freedom, her mother’s creative work was affected by the political restrictions imposed by the National Socialist regime. The grandmother, who studied at the Königsberg Art Academy, abandoned her artistic career after marriage.

All three artists significantly shaped the art of the 20th century, despite being subject to very different political and social conditions. Opportunities, professional development, and artistic freedom were closely tied to the context of their time — and yet each body of work stands out as independent, uncompromising, and powerful.
