The Heikendorf Artists’ Colony as a guest in Ferch

Light, Landscape and North German Modernism

From the early 20th century onwards, the Heikendorf Artists’ Colony on the Kiel Fjord developed into a major centre of North German painting. Drawn by the distinctive coastal landscape, the clear light and the proximity to the Baltic Sea, numerous artists found ideal working conditions here.

Among the leading figures of the Heikendorf Artists’ Colony were Heinrich Blunck, Hans Olde and Rudolf Behrend. Their works combine realistic observation of nature with Impressionist influences and an increasingly modern, free style of painting. Characteristic features include atmospheric coastal and landscape scenes, vibrant colours and a keen sense of light and atmosphere. Alongside landscape painting, portraiture also played an important role, often characterised by psychological depth and technical mastery.

The exhibition at the Museum of the Havelland Artists’ Colony showcases selected works and brings Heikendorf to life as a place of intense artistic exchange.
